The Choir stalls

The thirty choir stalls are distinguished by the outstanding carvings on the misericords or « mercy seats » (supports placed under the moving seat allowing the canons to be seated while giving the appearance of standing during the ceremonies).

They date back to the 17th century. They are carved with sculptures that represent angels’ heads, grimacing faces, characters reminiscent of the New World and its discoveries, domestic animals, imaginary creatures and scenes of every day life.

Some of them were sold as national assets in the revolutionary period and are no longer in the church.
