Statue of the Virgin and Child


According to the legend the statue would have been discovered in a lentil field on the church site.


Undoubtely, it dates back the end of 12th century . It is 95 cm tall. It was restored at the end of 19th century.
It was then presented wearing a thick coat.


Mostly venerated on the 15th of August,it became the origin of a pilgrimage where pilgrims used to bring along their sickly children.

It is characterized by the hieratic posture of the High Middle Ages, The Infant Jesus is in the center not sitting on a knee.

It represents a blessing God with two fingers up but its left hand outlines a gesture which foretells the natural style of the 13th century statues.


This statue was probably hidden during the revolutionary period. It reappeared lately nobody knowing where it came from.


Until now, thousands of believers have come to Saumur and the nearby to pray before the statue.
